How it Works

Bluguard VCI Bags™ utilize a combination of Vapor Phase Corrosion Inhibitor (VpCI) chemistry and barrier packaging materials to completely prevent the corrosion of your firearms and ammunition. The material that Bluguard VCI Bags™ are manufactured with is a proprietary lamination of materials that conjointly yield anti-corrosion properties that have not been commercially available until now.

This laminated, anti-corrosion barrier material is puncture resistant, tear resistant, non-abrasive, non-toxic, and will not harm any non-metal surfaces. However, the most important features of the material are its VpCI impregnated sealant layer and its foil barrier layer.

The VpCI impregnated inner layer is where the anti-corrosive properties come from. The VpCI chemistry impregnated in the interior layer migrates out of the plastic and forms an invisible gas inside of the bag. This gas is made up of singular VpCI molecules that are attracted to the interior and exterior metal surfaces of your firearm. The gas coats these metal surfaces with a one molecule thick layer of VpCI chemistry that stops corrosion before it can begin. This one molecule thick layer of VpCI chemistry dissipates off of the firearm with no cleaning necessary when it is removed from the bag so that the firearm is ready for immediate use.

Foil barrier layers have been used in the packaging industry for decades and are recognized as the best material for blocking the transfer of gasses and water vapor through flexible materials. The foil layer in Bluguard VCI Bags™ performs two tasks simultaneously; it keeps harmful corrosion causing elements out of the bag and keeps the corrosion inhibiting VpCI chemistry in the bag. This allows the bag to protect your firearms and ammunition for longer than any other product on the market.

Military Origins

Bluguard VCI Bags™ were derived from the award winning M16-A2 Long Term Storage & Preservation Bag designed and manufactured by Heritage Packaging for the US Marine Corps. Bluguard VCI Bags™ have made the Military Approved VpCI Barrier Packaging Technology an affordable option for both military and non-military personnel alike.

Application

The U.S. Marine Corps solicited the development of a flexible packaging system that would replace their existing method of preservation packaging for anti-corrosion protection of refurbished M-16A2 rifles. The new system needed to increase packaging speed and provide equivalent or superior corrosion inhibiting properties to the existing packaging method (wrapping weapons in MIL-PRF-3420G paper and heat sealing them inside a MIL-B-117, TY I, CL E, ST 1 barrier bag per MIL-PRF-131).

zcorr_test_m16handledSolution

Heritage Packaging designed and fabricated a re-closeable, shaped pouch from a proprietary VpCI Barrier Laminate. The bag is made with a viewing window for easy access to a rifle’s serial number and a Velcro closure, which provides fast, secure and reusable packing.

Testing

The Marine Corps needed to compare Heritage Packaging’s new system to their existing system. Testing was conducted by USAMC LOGSA PSCC in Tobyhanna, PA during the spring & summer of 2003. Test samples were subjected to:

  • Cold Temperature (-40F, 24 Hour Duration)
  • Temperature Shock (-40F to 95F)
  • High Temperature Cycle (91F to 160F, 24 Hour Duration)
  • Ten 24 Hour High Temperature / High Humidity Cycles (86F to 140F, 95% RH)
  • Free Fall Drop Test (2 Flat Faces From 3 Feet)
  • Loose Cargo Vibration, Repetitive Shock(1 Hour Duration)
  • Handling Throughout Testing and Inspection

zcorr_test_m16onshelfResults

USAMC LOGSA PSCC in Tobyhanna deemed, “Bag very durable & easy to use; No detectable rust/corrosion on any rifle; No condensation/dampness inside any bag; Bag remained unchanged by environments (not saturated, repelled condensation); Performed equal to or better than MIL-PRF-131 with MIL-PRF-3420 in preventing rust/corrosion of M16 rifles under varying environmental exposures.” Additionally, packaging productivity was increased from 3 rifles per hour to 4-6 rifles per minute.

The limiting factor on how long a Bluguard VCI Bags™ will provide anti-corrosion protection is how long the bag is able to keep the VpCI chemistry locked in. Because the foil barrier layer does not let any VpCI chemistry permeate it, the only way for it to escape is when the bag is opened and closed. Bags that are repeatedly opened and closed will maintain their protective qualities for approximately 5 years. Bags that are not opened frequently can maintain their protective qualities for up to 20 years.
